Belgian artist DZIA is known for his depictions of animals, which he places in urban and sometimes abandoned spaces. In doing so, he symbolically gives local wildlife a place within the city once again.

The great tit shown here, a bird commonly seen around the Eppendorfer Mühlenteich in Hamburg, found its place at this location for precisely that reason.

​

A fox, a woodpecker and a butterfly have also become part of a quiet residential complex in the north of Hamburg. Along the path leading towards Fuhlsbütteler Damm, the works appear almost casually between buildings and everyday routes. They blend into their surroundings and invite passers-by to discover them.

This is where the particular strength of DZIA’s art lies: it makes local wildlife visible within the urban environment and reminds us that we share these spaces with other living beings.

​

DZIA’s work is characterised by his distinctive graphic style. Fine lines capture the expressiveness of the animals, while flowing forms give the motifs a tangible sense of movement.

​

For me, it was especially rewarding to see how an initially inconspicuous surface was transformed into a place with new meaning. It is precisely this kind of transformation that makes projects like these so special.
